Physical therapists are experts in the way the body moves. Your therapist will identify the cause of pain or loss of function.  Each patient is evaluated at the area of complaint as well as contribution of the surrounding areas to the identified problem.  We approach patient function at home and work versus focusing on symptoms alone.   A physical therapist understands that your road to recovery is personal, so you will always receive a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.  Our therapists provide one-on-one treatment and as well as skilled hands-on manual therapy.  Your highly-qualified therapists and assistants will educate you in your condition and how you can work to improve it.

Job simulation:  Job simulation is a therapeutic intervention that will "mimic" the type of work that has to be done in the work place.  Whatever the activity simulated, in this setting, it is controlled and gradually increased to levels required for work and maximum functional improvement.

Job Demands:  Information about your job will be obtained to set up an individualized treatment program that will include:  push/pull, lift, carry, reach, impact/jarring work, fine motor, overhead and low-level work.

The PCH Rehabilitation Department offers treatment for the dizzy patient including treatment for BPPV (benign positional paroxysmal vertigo), inner ear disorders and much more.  Once the cause of dizziness is determined, the vestibular system must be trained in the same way other muscles in the body are…with exercise.  If you have questions concerning treatment please contact Patra Deere, MPT at (217) 562-6328.

Our Speech-language pathologist is a highly-trained individual. Providing: prevention, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of speech and articulation, language comprehension and expression, cognitive aspects of communication, voice and swallowing.

We will work with you to establish a program that will improve your quality of life as affected by speech, language or swallowing deficits and will advocate for you in educating yourself and family members and behaviors and environments that affect these basic aspects of living.

Our providers are also trained to use Vital Stim therapy for the treatment of swallowing disorders.

Aquatic therapy offers an alternate form of rehabilitation and can be used with traditional land-based therapy.  The main goal of aquatic therapy is to progress from water to land-based exercise in order to return to an adequate level of function.

Conditions aquatic therapy is beneficial for include, but are not limited to:

  • neck and back pain
  • upper and lower extremity pain
  • post-surgical orthopedic rehabilitation
  • fibromyalgia
  • healing bone fractures
  • neurologic conditions causing weakness
  • generalized weakness

Our 16' x 20' in-ground pool has 3-lanes of depth at 44", 52" and 66" with the benefit of an underwater treadmill for endurance and gorilla jet for resistance.  Aquatic therapy increases muscle tone, strength, endurance, cardiovascular function, circulation, flexibility, ROM, balance and coordination.

Aquatic therapy improves the quality of movement, strengthens and reduces pain.  Joint stress is reduced allowing the individual to perform exercise with less pain.  A water environment allows the opportunity to strengthen muscle without weights, decrease joint and soft tissue swelling and relax injured muscles allowing for greater blood flow to the injured area.

""Athletic Training

The athletic trainer at PCH serves multiple roles for the department.  Our athletic trainer works with patients and athletes in the clinic, serves our local high school athletes by providing sports medicine clinics and provides local sporting event coverage.

Our athletic trainer treats a wide variety of orthopedic injuries as well as functions as a first responder in athletic injury management.

ImPACT Concussion Management

Pana Community Hospital strives to prevent the rare but potential occurrence of Second-impact syndrome (SIS). In order to better manage concussions sustained by our student-athletes, we have acquired a software tool called ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing. If an athlete is believed to have suffered a head injury during competition, ImPACT is used to help determine the severity of head injury and when the injury has fully healed. The computerized exam is given to athletes before beginning contact sport practice or competition. This non-invasive test is set up in "video-game" type format and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. It is simple, and many athletes enjoy the challenge of taking the test. Essentially, the ImPACT test is a preseason physical of the brain. It tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration. However, it is not an IQ test. If a concussion is suspected, the athlete will be required to re-take the test. Both the preseason and post injury test data is given to a local doctor to help evaluate an injury. The information gathered can also be shared with your family doctor. The test data will enable these health professionals to determine when return to-play is appropriate and safe for the injured athlete.

Excel Sports Enhancement

The Excell Sports Enhancement Program is designed to bridge the rehabilitated athlete from skilled care to guided exercise and high-level drills before returning to a sport or between seasons.  The program is also an excellent opportunity for any athlete looking to develop a higher level of function in their specific sport. Excel includes 12 one hour sessions working on the specific sport the athlete identifies.
